Sask. Egg Producers support nourishment room for new moms

A new Nourishment Room in Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital will help bring comfort and care to pregnant women and new mothers, as they welcome their baby into the world.

Saskatchewan Egg Producers is helping make the Nourishment Room within the Maternal Care Centre possible, thanks to their generous gift of $50,000.

The Nourishment Room will be stocked with appropriate food items to provide patients with healthy snack and beverage options in between meals, offering a touch of normalcy to their time in hospital.

Saskatchewan Egg Producers wanted to commemorate their 50th anniversary in a meaningful and lasting way, to show natural goodness is about more than just the local, nutritious eggs they deliver — it’s also about caring for one another.

“Our farmers are grateful to Saskatchewan people for buying our eggs over the past five decades and we wanted to give back through a project that benefits the whole province. Supporting Jim Pattison’s Children’s Hospital was an obvious choice, as it will make a huge difference in bringing health and happiness to Saskatchewan families and when it comes down to it, that’s what we’re all about,” said Shawn Harman, Chair of Saskatchewan Egg Producers.

Maternal care services will be located on the third floor of the new hospital and will be the size of two football fields. There will be space to care for more than 6.000 pregnant women each year, with services such as labour and delivery, antepartum and postpartum care.

The Nourishment Room will help bring a home environment to the hospital, featuring a kitchen style sink, along with cupboards, refrigerator, microwave, toaster and more.

“We are so thankful for this generous contribution, which will enhance the care provided to our province’s moms and families,” said Kristina Konchak, Director of Major Gifts with Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. “This incredible Nourishment Room will provide access to nutritious food, which is an important part of helping patients regain their strength and heal.”

In addition to their donation, Saskatchewan Egg Producers have also challenged other industry leaders in the agriculture sector to join them in making a gift to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“We encourage all businesses in the agriculture sector to contribute in some way. The new hospital is close to the finish line and together we can finish strong,” Harman added.

The combined donation total will be announced at Canadian Western Agribition in November.
