Building a brighter future for our province’s kids and families

What will you be remembered for? The global pandemic has brought this question to the forefront for many who are uncertain about what the future holds.

You can bring some certainty to today and plan for a better tomorrow by becoming a Legacy Builder with Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation.

A planned gift helps ensure children and moms in our province can rely on specialized health care into the future. By planning a gift today, you can give hope to Saskatchewan families for generations.

Why planning today matters

A legacy gift to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation means leaving a contribution much larger than what may be possible during your lifetime. By planning today, you can have a tremendous impact on the future health of Saskatchewan kids.

Although it may be a charitable gift for someday in the future, you can still receive recognition today. Please let us know if you have included Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation in your estate plan so we can recognize you appropriately for your future gift and ensure your intentions will be carried out.

Five ways you can leave a legacy

  1. Life insurance —The donation of a new life insurance policy or adding Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation to an existing policy provides the opportunity to make a substantial contribution while providing you or your estate with potentially significant tax benefits.
  2. Gift in will — A specified gift in your will, also known as a charitable bequest, is one of the simplest ways to make a gift. It can be a certain sum of money, specific assets or part of an estate. Some benefits of a bequest to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation include tax savings in the year of your death and no reduction in your present income or savings.
  3. Retirement funds — Naming Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation as a beneficiary on your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) or Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) allows you to donate all or a portion of your retirement savings to the Foundation. Your estate will receive a charitable tax receipt for the donation.
  4. Endowments — Endowment funds are an efficient way to make a significant gift and create a continuous stream of income for Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. Funds can be designated for general use by the Foundation or to a named fund for a specific use.
  5. Donations of securities — Gifts of securities such as stocks and mutual funds are a tax-effective way to contribute to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. As of 2006, Canadians are not taxed on the capital gain of donated securities. You receive a tax receipt for the fair market value of the securities. By donating gifts of securities, you often enjoy tax savings greater than those you receive when donating cash. Securities can be donated throughout your lifetime or through your will.

The impact of your legacy

For many, helping enhance the future of Saskatchewan’s maternal and children’s health care is one of the reasons they chose to include Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation in their charitable giving plan.

Your future support will help provide critical maternal and pediatric equipment, sustain provincial programs and fund life-saving research that will provide hope for Saskatchewan families.

“Legacy Builders are truly remarkable because their generosity and forethought can change the future of Saskatchewan. A legacy gift helps ensure Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital remains a world-class facility and that the right tools for provincial specialized maternal and children’s health care needs are met for future generations. By planning a gift of hope today, we can ensure your legacy will live on and be a true reflection of what you value most,” said Brynn Boback-Lane, President and CEO of Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Cliff and Deb Wiegers

Cliff and Deb established Wiegers Financial & Benefits in Saskatoon in 1991. The Care for Kids by Wiegers event has raised more than $1.5 million in support of enhanced children’s health care services at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital. Together, Cliff and Deb are helping ensure the health of our next generation through their dedication both professionally and personally.

“We were blessed with four healthy children but had enough experience with them in hospital to know that Saskatchewan needed a dedicated children’s hospital where children and their families could feel safe, comfortable, and mentally supported. This is why we began supporting Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation more than 20 years ago, and why we continue to support it today personally, through our business’s charity, and through planned giving. We are proud to support this incredible organization!”

Bernice Harrison

Bernice Harrison lived a selfless life dedicated to compassion, volunteerism and philanthropy. She had a special place in her heart for children and was a strong advocate for inclusion and resources to help meet each child’s individual needs, both physically and mentally. Bernice generously included Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation into her estate plan, to ensure the best care possible for Saskatchewan kids and families. Following her passing in 2020, Bernice’s legacy gift meant $100,000 of provincial donations were matched during the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Radiothon to support Saskatchewan kids in hospital. Her bequest is also helping children find joy and healing through play at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital.

Brian Ehmann

Brian Ehmann was a gentle man who cared for the people around him whether they were his neighbours, their children, work colleagues or complete strangers. He wanted to help his community and especially the children within it. To reflect these strongly held beliefs, he left a generous legacy gift to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation upon his passing in June of 2020. Brian valued progressive, proactive thinking and being in the financial sector for 37 years, he was a great planner. Saskatchewan children and mothers-to-be are now benefitting from Brian’s hard work and compassion through his planned gift. This kind and charitable man had no children of his own but recognized that contributing to their good health and well-being would be the best investment he could ever make.

Theresa Martin

Theresa Martin of Spiritwood, Sask. always had a heart for kids. Born premature herself, she was always drawn to care for those who needed a little extra help to heal and grow. After she passed at the age of 82 in 2017, her decision to leave a gift of $297,000 in her will to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation seemed like the perfect fit for her family. Thanks to her generous gift, a private patient room and specialized equipment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) now bear her name.
