New treatment space gets big boost from homegrown company

A specialized service coming to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital is receiving a financial boost thanks to a Prince Albert-based company with a heart for kids. B&B Construction has generously gifted $250,000 to support the Pediatric Occupational Therapy Treatment and Splinting Room on the main floor of Saskatchewan’s first dedicated maternal and children’s hospital.

“The B&B Construction Group is excited and proud to be able to make this commitment and donation to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. On behalf of our employees and the Broda, Clunie and Burkosky families we thank all who have made this very needed facility and health service possible,” said B&B Construction Group Partner Russell Clunie Jr. “In making this donation we feel the Children’s hospital is a long needed and fantastic addition to our province which will serve and support many children and families though out Saskatchewan as well as our own community here in Prince Albert.”

The treatment and splinting room will be a place where a child’s ability to perform tasks typical for their age will be assessed. In many cases, children who have experienced an injury or weakness may require splints or other specialized equipment to help their bodies achieve a desired position, provide protection and/or support and assist with their function and recovery.

The gift from B&B Construction will ensure that kids like 13-year-old Nicko of Martensville can access treatment suitable. Nicko was born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephaus, which meant he needed a shunt tube, a back brace and surgery at only two days old. His toughest hospital days are over, but Nicko still requires check-ups in Occupational Therapy which means he will, on occasion, call the new Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital home.

“Nicko has been through so much, and Occupational Therapy has helped him rise above some of his challenges,” said Nicko’s mom Heather. “It’s heartwarming to know that this service is receiving a boost in the new children’s hospital that will help many kids just like Nicko. It has made all the difference in Nicko’s life so we know first-hand how important this service is.”

“This generous gift from B&B Construction will make a substantial difference for Saskatchewan children,” said Brynn Boback-Lane, president and CEO of Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital will be a place where fear associated with medical procedures will be reduced, and kids can receive the care they need close to home. Pediatric Occupational Therapy will allow children to work towards their therapeutic goals alongside their family and we are so thankful that B&B Construction is supporting such a vital part of their recovery.”

B&B Construction’s gift supports Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation’s “We Are Saskatchewan” capital campaign, which has accumulated $68 million towards a campaign goal of a minimum of $75 million. Construction on Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital substantially complete and is on schedule for a fall 2019 opening.
