Elara was born with complex congenital heart defects, made even more complicated by being born ten weeks premature. Elara was whisked to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) before mom Tara or dad Doug could even hold her. Elara’s health suddenly deteriorated when she was four days old and doctors explained that she would need surgery immediately to save her life. Weighing only 3.5 pounds, Elara was simply too small to undergo the necessary surgery. For two months, her tiny body survived on life support in the NICU. She had heart failure, battled bacterial pneumonia and suffered septicemia during her long wait.
Despite statistics that said she would never speak, Elara is now 9 years old and beating the odds. She has taken on 12 surgeries, three of which were open heart surgeries where she endured complications each time.
Elara has battled health complications throughout her life and will continue to be seen by doctors at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital. She knows that the hospital is a place filled with people who help her and make her feel better when she’s sick. Help Elara raise funds for this year’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Radiothon!
