14 year old Charlie has always been happy and outgoing, and has been known to be quite the jokester.  In what seemed to be just a matter of days, the lively teenager quickly found herself lacking the energy to get off the couch or walk without fainting.  Those closest to her thought she must be pulling a prank, knowing her silly character, until one day when Charlie collapsed in church. It was clear that this was more than Charlie just trying to be funny.

Charlie was brought to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital where tests revelead a nearly non-existent white blood cell count.  Diagnosed with b-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia, more commonly known as ALL, Charlie was admitted for a month-long stay at JPCH.

With her condition appearing to be stabilized, she was granted a day pass to go home to Melfort on September 10, 2021, but while there, began complaining of severe stomach pains.  Charlie was going into septic shock and an infection was causing her blood-pressure to drop so dangerously low that her veins were beginning to collapse on themselves. Charlie was rushed to the PICU where she became unresponsive. After emergency surgery, she was placed in a medically induced coma for three days.

Throughout her journey, Charlie has had 10 surgeries, spent over six months at JPCH, encountered unending complications, had multiple rounds of chemotherapy, and so much more.  Though she may have lost her ability to do some of the things she did prior to her diagnosis, Charlie has never lost her personality. Her smile beams as bright as ever and her jokes have never stopped.
