On a blissful winter day in 2020, Jax took to the nearest hill with his mom to go sledding. After taking a spill, Jax thought he had injured his knee and chalked it up to a normal sledding accident that would heal itself in time. Fast forward nine months and Jax’s injury still hadn’t gotten better. Instead, he was having difficulty walking and standing without pain and discomfort.

When Jax was able to see an orthopedic specialist in Prince Albert, it took one look at Jax’s injury to realize that it wasn’t the knee that was his issue but that his hip was what was truly causing Jax trouble.  Jax was immediately sent to Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital and they were whisked off to begin a multitude of scans and exams. It wasn’t until November 2021, almost a full year after Jax’s initial injury, that he was finally diagnosed.

What Jax’s medical team found after extensive testing was that Jax had a substantial mass on his hip that needed treatment immediately. Jax was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. At the time of Jax’s diagnosis, Jax was told that there was a 20% chance that the treatments he was undergoing would completely cure it. That number has never scared Jax; it’s only motivated him.

Through the intense rounds of chemotherapy, admissions to JPCH, and radiation, Jax has had a fighting attitude. Jax keeps a positive attitude on his current situation and what his future holds, an attitude that has helped him throughout his fight.

In September 2022, Jax was given the amazing news that the cancer was in partial remission and the tumor has significantly decreased in size. This meant for Jax he was winning his fight and continues trying to win each and every day.
