On July 26, 2022, 4 year old Parker’s life would be forever changed.  The day started like any other. Laura-Lee, Parker’s mom, said her goodbyes to her husband Tyrone and son Parker as they drove off to pick up Parker’s brother Rod, expecting them home in a few hours. It was on Highway 11, that tragedy struck. While driving back to their home on Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, a car traveling on the wrong side of the double-lane highway collided with Tyrone’s truck.

Laura-Lee received the call that every wife and mother dreads. The car accident had killed her husband instantly upon impact. News about Parker came soon after when she learned that he was being airlifted to Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH). Parker’s seat belt had damaged his small intestine and he had lost a lot of blood.

The young boy required a blood transfusion, emergency surgery on his small intestine, and fusion of his C2 and C3 vertebrae. Parker was placed into a coma to recover in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at JPCH. When he awoke, he learned that he would now be in a wheelchair and that his life as he knew it would be very different.

After 31 days as a patient at JPCH, Parker was discharged. The road to recovery is still a long one for Parker and his family. He continues to visit JPCH regularly, attending appointments three times a week for physiotherapy. Even with his injuries, Parker’s recovery has been remarkable and he is back to doing the things he loves thanks to the lifesaving care he received at JPCH.
