Miracle Story Rory

2024 Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Radiothon presented by CIBC Wood Gundy
Hope from Warman, SK., knows Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital inside out; both as a dedicated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse and mother. When her son, Rory, was born prematurely at 32 weeks in January of 2022, he spent 21 days in the NICU.
About a year later, facing a serious accident, Hope had to rely on the very colleagues she works alongside every day to care for him.
In March 2023, at just 14 months old, Rory suffered a severe accident involving boiling water. He sustained burns over 80% of the front of his body, necessitating immediate intensive care. Rory was initially treated in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at JPCH for three days before being transferred to a specialized burn unit in Edmonton.
“I was in shock and just praying and hoping he was going to be okay,” said Hope. “I wasn’t sure what the next few days or weeks ahead would look like. I was afraid.”
Throughout these harrowing experiences, Hope was profoundly grateful for the care Rory received.
“As a NICU nurse I get to witness firsthand on a daily basis how dedicated, compassionate and caring the NICU team is, but getting to experience it as a parent made me appreciate the staff in a much different way,” said Hope. “Not only does the medical team care for your child, they also care for you. The staff always wanted to make sure you understand what is happening with your baby and make sure you had all the information when making decisions about the care. They were there for emotional support as well, and helped us navigate through a difficult time knowing they were doing what was best for us,” she continued.
Now, at two and a half years old, Rory is thriving. He is an adventurous boy who loves to explore outside and loves to smile and laugh. He brings so much joy to everyone he meets! Some of his favorite things are cars, playing with bubbles, going on walks, and sneaking into the butter dish. Despite some scarring from his burns, doctors are optimistic about his continued healing.
Hope’s experiences have also impacted her professional life. Returning to her role as a nurse, she feels a renewed sense of empathy and connection with the families she cares for.
“I’m grateful I get to now return the favour and provide care as a nurse to families where I’ve walked in their shoes,” said Hope.
