Child Life Zone

Child Life ZoneYoung patients at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital have a special space to play, learn, laugh, and relax in a state-of-the-art therapeutic play area known as The Teammates for Kids Child Life Zone. A first of its kind in Canada, the Child Life Zone offers support and education for young patients and their families to help reduce stress and anxiety associated with hospital stays, tests, and procedures. The Child Life Zone provides a space for patients to refresh from the medical environment and participate in activities they may be missing out on while in hospital. The Mosaic Child Life Program includes the expertise of Certified Child Life Specialists, Recreation Therapists and a Music Therapist.

Main Lobby Theatre

TheatreHaving to be in hospital can be stressful and scary for any child and their family, but what better way to brighten their stay than with their favorite movie? Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital is home to a theatre in the main floor lobby where pediatric patients and their families can laugh and relax. The goal is to create a fun escape from the reality of the illnesses and medical treatments children in the hospital face and in the process, hopefully deliver a “normal” experience for the entire family. It’s about minimizing the negative impact of illness and hospitalization and giving children and families a positive experience to focus on and remember.

100% Private Patient Rooms

Private Patient RoomsOne of the best examples of providing an environment that promotes wellness and a sense of transformation is our private patient rooms. Private rooms help to reduce stress on children and their families by providing ample space, peace and quiet for a comfortable night’s sleep, all while improving infection control. Each private room includes space for visitors and a place for a parent or spouse to sleep. Single patient rooms are known to improve patient care delivery because they provide privacy not only for the family but for patient consultations with clinicians.

Outdoor Play Space

Outdoor Play SpaceAccessible from the Acute Care and Intensive Care Units lies a sanctuary for patients and their families to wander, explore, play or just quietly reflect. Offering access to nature, this space provides important therapeutic and relaxation opportunities for patients; especially for those experiencing stress or longer stays. The serenity of nature helps soothe the body, mind and soul, uplifting the spirit and enhancing healing.

The care process typically includes an assessment to determine the testing to be performed, an overnight sleep study and individualized treatment plans.

These rooms include sleep space for supportive family members, plus added room for extra comfort. Now, the whole family can remain together while their little ones receive the care they need to grow.

Child Minding Area

Child Minding AreaWhen a family is visiting Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital to obtain care for one child, they often need a safe environment in which they can leave their other children so that they can focus their attention on the one receiving treatment. The Child Minding Area provides safe, nurturing care to children whose siblings are being treated at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital. This space provides short-term supervision of children between ages one and 12 as well as services to children up to 15 years of age with cognitive disabilities.

Pediatric Catheterization Lab/Special Procedure Room

Pediatric Catheterization offers a clear picture of heart chambers, valves, and vessels; their formation and their functioning. This space also acts as a Special Procedure Room where complex procedures which do not require the space required of the OR can be performed.
